During the long reign of the Socialist Party in Spain, public-funded education has taught nothing more than the wonders of the Government and its pure and fair intentions. Private initiative and self-improvement were, and are, seen as “selfish”. That is wrong. No bureaucratic elite can match a free society’s will to improve. Bureaucrats want us to see them as a necessity, as the thin line between safety and chaos . If only Spaniards were bold enough to put that to the test, they would find out that there is nothing to be afraid of.

Durante el largo reinado del Partido Socialista en España, la ecuación publica solo ha enseñado las bondades del Gobierno y sus puras y justas intenciones. La iniciativa privada y la mejora personal era, y son, vistas como “egoístas”. Falso. Ninguna elite burocrática puede competir con la capacidad de mejora de una sociedad libre. Los burócratas del gobierno quieren que les veamos como una necesidad, como la fina linea entre seguridad y caos. Si los españoles fueran valientes como para comprobarlo en la practica, se darían cuenta de que no hay nada que temer.

Governments usually fall when the economy deteriorates. In Spain, it does not really matter. The main opposition party campaigned hard against the government before last March’s poll in economic terms but they lost anyway. Spain’s inflation stands at 4.7pc, house prices have fallen 15pc since September and unemployment will hit 10pc in just few months’ time (Daily Telegraph, May 30 2008) The current-account deficit is the worst in the developed world. But Spaniards are not fans of liberalization and reforms are not on the way. They might not care about economics but they are sure to feel the effects of the crisis very soon.

(Spanish) Que venga la crisis

Los gobiernos suelen caer cuanto la economía empeora. En España, eso no importa. El principal partido de la oposición fue duro con el gobierno en economía antes de las elecciones del pasado Marzo, y perdieron de todas formas. La inflación esta en el 4,7%, el precio de la vivienda ha caído un 15% desde Septiembre y el desempleo alcanzará el 10% dentro de muy pocos meses. El déficit por cuenta corriente es el peor del mundo desarrollado. Pero a los españoles no les gusta liberalizar y no hay reformas planeadas. Puede que no les guste la economía, pero lo que es seguro es que van a sentir los efectos de la crisis muy pronto.

There can be no freedom without responsibility. Fat people in Britain tend to blame full-fat milk and chocolate for their condition; anxious liberals blame cheap alcohol for England’s massive binge-drinking problem. It is not that they actually buy these products and consume them voluntarily. No puede haber libertad sin responsabilidad. Los obesos en Reino Unido tienden a culpa a leche entera y al chocolate por su condición; ansiosos progresistas culpan el alcohol barato por el grave problema que tiene Inglaterra con la bebida. No es que esos productos hayan sido adquiridos y consumidos de forma voluntaria. No es que hayan usado el crédito del banco para comprar una television plana de 42″ por que querían sino por que el banco les ofreció crédito. Es demasiado fácil culpar a otros por los propios errores.

The World is not running out of oil. Recent findings will make Canada and Brazil as large producers as Saudi Arabia, and they are likely to run their business much better than the bureaucratic leviathans of Venezuela and Russia’s public-owned companies. Oil is expensive because some speculators believe it will get even more expensive soon thanks to other speculators. The balance of demand and output is not worse than when oil was purchased at $20 a barrel and prices will drop, even if they reach $300 first, as Yahoo! shares peaked at $250.06 in January 2000, not because the company was sound, but because everybody else was buying it shares.

(Spanish) Es caro… por que es caro

El mundo no se esta quedando sin petróleo. Recientes descubrimientos en Canadá y Brasil situaran a ambos países como productores tan importantes como Arabia Saudi, y es seguro que lo harán mejor que los leviatanes que son las companias publicas de Venezuela y Rusia. El petróleo es caro por que algunos especuladores creen que sera mas caro dentro de poco gracias a otros especuladores. El balance entre oferta y demanda no es peor que cuando el petróleo se pagaba a $20 el barril, y los precios bajaran aunque alcancen los £300, igual que las acciones de Yahoo! llegaron a costar $250,06 en Enero del 2008, no por que la compañía fuera rentable, sino por que todo el mundo compraba sus acciones.

Britain realised last Saturday something that the rest of Europe had known for decades: Eurovision is not about music but politics. British believe in fairness and their last position in last Saturday’s stravaganza sparked a row as they believed their song was good enough to win, which is actually true. The European Union and Russia are not keen on free voting and transparency so nobody expects Eurovision to be fair. Instead of laughing at it, like the very successful Spanish participant did, they decided to go for the prize. One expects a bit more wisdom from across the Channel.

(Spanish) Demasiado bueno para ganar

Reino Unido se dio cuenta el pasado sábado de algo que el resto de Europa ha sabido durante décadas: Eurovision no es sobre música sino sobre política. Los británicos creen en la justicia y su ultima posición ha causado furia en la país por que creían que su canción era suficientemente buena como para ganar, cosa que es verdad. La Unión Europea no es muy dada a las votaciones libres y la transparencia, así que nadie espera que Eurovision sea justa. En vez de reírse, como hizo el exitoso participante español, decidieron ir a buscar la victoria. Uno espera algo mas de sabiduría desde el otro lado del Canal.

Britain is full of public government campaigns, not only to remind us of our duty to pay taxes, but also to eat five fruits a day, reduce our drinking, drive safely, moderate the consumption of sunflower oil etc. Britain is not only the most watched country by number of CCTV cameras, but it is also a country which government pretend to know how to rule our lives better than ourselves. Gordon Brown, the unelected Primer Minister, might believe in individual initiative and responsibility as Britain’s engine, but bullying people is not the way to put his ideal into practice.

(Spanish) Creer no es suficiente

Reino Unido esta lleno de campañas gubernamentales, no solo para recordarnos nuestro deber de pagar impuestos, también para comer cinco frutas al día, beber menos, conducir de forma mas segura, reducir el consume de aceite de girasol etc. Reino Unido no es solo el país mas vigilado por cámaras de seguridad (CCTV), es también el país donde el gobierno cree que puede dirigir las vidas de los ciudadanos mejor que los propios ciudadanos. Gordon Brown, Primer Ministro al que nadie voto, puede que cree en la iniciativa individual como el motor de Reino Unido pero acosar a los britanicos no es la mejor forma de poner su ideal en practica.

It is too easy to turn to governments in search of security. In Britain, new DNA databases and ID cards promise to save us all. They say there cannot be freedom without security. Governments wish to trade their responsibility to our security for something that does not belong to them: freedom belongs to individuals, not to a distant bureaucratic elite. If the Free World is to win its struggle against extremism and oppression, it will need something to fight for.

Es muy fácil el ponerse a posposición de los gobiernos en busca de seguridad. En el Reino Unido, nuevas bases de datos de ADN y la propuesta de un DNI prometen salvarnos a todos. Dicen que no puede haber libertad sin seguridad. Los gobiernos quieren intercambiar su responsabilidad de protegernos por algo que no les pertenece. La libertad pertenece a los individuos, no a una distante elite burocrática. Si el Mundo Libre quiere ganar su enfrentamiento con el extremismo y la opresión, necesitara algo por lo que luchar.

The country’s public finances are in shambles and the Britons demand a balanced budged to the government. They could start by balancing their own personal finances.

La deuda personal en el Reino Unido fue superior al PIB del país en 2007, un total de £1.423 billones (denominacion anglo sajona), una media de £9.216 por hogar excluyendo hipotecas. La culpa suele atribuirse a los bajos tipos de interés pero pedir un préstamo o una tarjeta de crédito no es obligatorio. Es muy fácil culpar al Banco de Inglaterra y al moderno mercado financiero pero tan solo ofrecen herramientas que deben ser usadas con cautela. Los británicos han vivido por encima de sus posibilidades durante demasiado tiempo, usando la burbuja inmobiliaria para financiar la compra de bienes que ni necesitaban ni se podían permitir. Las finanzas publicas están en un estado desastroso y los ciudadanos piden al gobierno que cuadre el presupuesto. Podrían empezar por cuadrar sus propias cuentas.

Climate Change, rebranded from Global Warming as it turned out to be no warming after all, peaked in popularity in 2007 when Al Gore secured the Nobel prize. Back then, housing markets in the US, Britain, Spain and Ireland reached a decade-long high. With low unemployment and interest rates and inflation under control, Climate Change was the main topic in every conversation and news bulletin. Now, after the US-led end of the bonanza, those who predicted the apocalypse are too busy worrying about their mortgages. Their priorities suddlenly look clear.

El Cambio Climático, cuya dominación cambio desde Calentamiento Global por que al final no había calentamiento alguno, alcanzo su máxima popularidad en 2007 cuando Al Gore consiguió el Premio Nobel. Por aquel entonces, los mercados inmobiliarios de Estados Unidos, Reino Unido, España e Irlanda alcanzaban su punto mas álgido en 10 años. Con bajo desempleo y tipos de interés y con la inflación bajo control, el Cambio Climático era el tópico estrella en todas las conversaciones y boletines de noticias. Ahora, con el fin de la bonanza desde Estados Unidos, aquellos que predecían el apocalipsis están demasiado ocupados preocupandose de su hipoteca. Sus prioridades están ahora claras.

It might not be easy because Russia’s control of Europe’s main oil and gas supplies but it would be the right thing to do. It is certainly harder than dealing with Zimbabwe, which regime has rightly received strong verbal attacks from the European Union for its lack of respect for Human Rights. It is interesting, and sad, to see how European Union’s verbal strength dilutes in oil and some of its members have signed bilateral agreements with the Kremlin to guarantee their own energy supply. The silence of many of its members regarding oil-powered Russia’s worrying record on liberties says much more about Europe’s commitment to freedom than its attacks to third-world Zimbabwe.

Puede que no sea sencillo gracias al control de Rusia sobre el abastecimiento europeo de petróleo y gas. Desde luego, es mas difícil que criticar a Zimbawe, cuyo régimen ha sido atacado verbalmente por la Unión Europea, con razón, por su falta de respeto por los Derechos Humanos. Es interesante, y triste, el ver como la fuerza la Unión Europea se diluye en petróleo y el ver como algunos de sus miembros firman pactos bilaterales con Rusia para garantizar su propio abastecimiento de energía. El silencio de muchos miembros de la Unión sobre la preocupante falta de libertad en Rusia dice mucho mas sobre el compromiso de Europa con la libertad que sus ataques al tercermundista Zimbawe
